“My son!” A proud smile appeared on Madam Qiao’s face and her eyes slanted smugly towards Madam Gu.

It was only when she heard his last words that she remembered that she was on Lian Fang Zhou’s property and felt unhappy. Snorting, she said: “She will give me justice? It’s fine if she doesn’t help outsiders to bully me! How can I count on her to give me justice? Son, what are you afraid of? If she has no respect, you can just send a message to the county magistrate and have her property seized! Put her in jail! Then see how arrogant she is!”

Lian Fang Zhou was so angry that she laughed.

“Mother!” Lian Hai frowned at Madam Qiao, “What nonsense are you saying?”

After her son had promised to vent her anger, Madam Qiao was overjoyed. How could she still put Lian Fang Zhou in her eyes?

Aunt Zhang and Ah Jian didn’t listen to her, so she had already turned all her anger and jealousy on Lian Fang Zhou. After waiting so long, her resentment finally erupted.

She didn’t understand her son’s mind at all.

Hearing Lian Hai chide her, Madam Qiao became even more aggrieved: “I’m not talking nonsense! If it wasn’t for this dead girl’s bad intentions, how dare these people—”

“Mother!” Lian Hai interrupted her in a low voice, giving Lian Fang Zhou a pleading but helpless smile. He frowned at his mother and said: “Don’t wrong Fang Zhou anymore! Tell me what’s going on!”

Lian Fang Zhou was stunned and glanced over at Ah Jian with a strange look. Both of their eyes were filled with doubts. There was no reason for Lian Hai to protect her like that, right?

“Miss Lian, this is what happened!” Seeing that Lian Fang Zhou wasn’t speaking and Scholar Lian was only asking his mother, Madam Gu immediately became anxious.

Lian Fang Zhou raised her head and cut her off with a soft smile. “Don’t worry Auntie Gu, you will all get a chance to speak, one by one. First, let’s listen to what my aunt has to say.”

“Alright…” Madam Gu had no choice but to nod her head reluctantly, no matter how anxious she was in her heart.

Madam Qiao, of course, took this as a concession that Lian Fang Zhou was making out of fear of her son. Snorting, she pointed at Madam Gu and said: “That sister-in-law has wronged me and accused me of stealing cotton! And those people as well!”

She pointed to the other woman one by one, actually blaming all of them. “These people were working with that sister-in-law to wrong me, they were all talking slander!”

“Who wronged you!” The crowd exploded with a bang and Madam Gu shouted: “I saw it with my own eyes and caught it with my own hands! How dare you deny it? It’s just a matter of denying it but you’re actually trying to kick us sister-in-laws! It’s a testimony, even if you want to lie you can’t. Miss Lian, Scholar Lian, if you don’t believe it, search her body! When you open her pocket, you will naturally know who has wronged whom!”

At first, the other women had been hesitant to speak fairly because of Lian Hai and because of the identities of Lian Fang Zhou and Madam Qiao, but Madam Qiao’s words had pushed them to the opposite side.

The entire group immediately jumped to back Madam Gu.

Was Madam Qiao someone who would listen to people scold her and not retaliate? She quickly started yelling and arguing with them.

When the woman saw her cursing them, they became angry and started cursing her back.

No matter how bold Madam Qiao was, she only had one mouth. Facing seven or eight mouths, she had to admit defeat. Her voice was hoarse, completely drowned out by the other women.

This made her even more angry!

Aunt Zhang moved her lips, glanced at Lian Fang Zhou, and sighed silently.

Lian Hai had not expected things to turn out like this. With his identity, forget scolding the women, even if he tried to argue with them, he felt that he would lose all dignity. He could only stand there and frown.

Just as the commotion was reaching its peak, Lian Fang Zhou called out loudly.

Madam Gu, of course, gave her face and stopped as soon as she heard her.

On the other hand, Madam Qiao didn’t pay her any mind and so she was left shouting hoarsely by herself.

All the other woman looked at each other in dismay. This Madam Qiao was really a rare gem!

“Cousin, please stop eldest aunt. Let’s talk about it, alright? How can we solve this?” Lian Fang Zhou asked Lian Hai very politely.

Lian Hai’s face flushed red, making him look so embarrassed that he wanted to burrow into a crack in the ground.

But how could he? He could only stop Madam Qiao.

When Madam Qiao saw her son starting to speak, she stopped immediately. However, she was even more arrogant: she didn’t care at all what Lian Fang Zhou thought, so what if that dead girl accused her? There was no way to punish her!

After all, her son’s face was too big!

She knew that she would be afraid of her son!

“Auntie Gu and the workers say that you stole cotton but you say you did not. So many people uniting to wrong you, is this reasonable? After all, there is no grudge between you and no hatred recently. It’s pretty easy to figure out.” Lian Fang Zhou said politely.

“You dare!” Madam Qiao shrieked.

“Fang Zhou, this is not good.” Lian Hai’s face was ugly. After all, this was his mother.

“I know it’s not good.” Lian Fang Zhou sighed helplessly. “Actually, I feel very bad that something like this happened today. But other than this, Cousin, do you have any other explanation? No matter who has wronged whom, there is always one party that is innocent. Since someone is innocent, it has to be explained properly, right? A matter like this can’t be left unclear!”

Lian Hai was stunned speechless.

On the side, Madam Gu agreed while Madam Qiao protested loudly, refusing to do it.

The two sides were about to quarrel again buy Aunt Zhang quickly stepped in to stop the conversation.

In fact, at this stage, Lian Hai was also inclined to believe Madam Gu and the others but he still couldn’t believe that his mother would do such a thing.

She was his own mother!

Lian Hai regretted it deeply.  If he had known earlier, he wouldn’t have taken the initiative to follow her. Now the dilemma was on him.

“Fang Zhou…” Lian Hai looked at Lian Fang Zhou with a pleading look.

He really couldn’t afford to lose this argument. A scholar’s mother caught on the spot for stealing things, and even stealing his cousin’s things, he would be so ashamed.

If it spread out, he would be laughed at to death!

It may even become associated with his own virtue, causing others to doubt his own integrity.

In fact, ever since Madam Qiao had stretched out her hand and was caught on the spot by Madam Gu, if someone wanted to make a fuss about it, his integrity had already been lost!

If it wasn’t for his own self-interest, wanting to pull Madam Qiao to do the so-called ‘help’, this kind of thing would not have happened. If he wanted to blame someone, he could only blame himself for tripping over his own cleverness!

Lian Fang Zhou didn’t accept his pleading gaze. Looking down at the ground under his feet, he said indifferently: “Cousin, have you come up with any solutions? If it’s feasible, I’ll listen to my cousin.”

  1. ty.
sigh he shows some nice self aware reflecting at the end there, but the rest is crap.
not having him around sure would be a lot less hassle. him trying to ingratiate himself only backfires and causes trouble for fang zhou.

    1. I think he’s just a careless person. He kind of reminds me of a research grad who is so focused on getting his credit to score a good job that he doesn’t notice how much he hurts the people around him.

      1. that fits well. can see it – rushing at the idea of getting closer to his goal of officialdom, not thinking the idea through completely, running of half cocked and pitting himself.
