“It’s just an injury on the surface of the skin, its not a big matter. Just apply some hot water and it will heal in two days.” Ah Jian said to Lian Fang Zhou, looking at the palm print on Lian Che’s cheek.

Lian Fang Zhou nodded lightly with a ‘hmm’.

She also understood what Ah Jian did not say. He was telling her not to spoil the children too much.

After returning to her sense, Lian Fang Zhou smiled privately in her heart and her mood relaxed.

Indeed, she was foolish to care over such a small matter. This was not a serious injury.

In the future, they would have to go through and face much worse things. Such a little trauma was indeed, not worth the fuss.

After a while, Zhang Yan came over with the ointment. Lian Fang Zhou took the medicine and thanked her with a smile. Ah Jian looked at the ointment and the applied it for Lian Che.

After sitting and talking for a while, Lian Fang Zhou and Third Aunt went to the kitchen to cook.

When the meal was finished, Ah Jian and the others went to plant the water plantains and Lian Fang Zhou went to settle the bill with Gu Shi. The next morning, she and Lian Ze were a little restless and returned before the planting.

At the Li family, as soon as Madam Zhao returned home, she heard about the matter and couldn’t help but ask Aunt Zhang curiously.

Aunt Zhang was not a gossip and she frowned at her question.

She didn’t really want to repeat it but she was afraid that if she didn’t tell her, her daughter-in-law would go around asking other people, so she simply told her the facts.

Aunt Zhang might not like gossip but the young wife, Madam Zhao, loved it! She listened with great interested and inevitably asked a lot of questions about the details.

When she asked, Aunt Zhang had to answer.

As a result, Madam Zhao asked about everything.

Madam Zhao’s eyes were shining with excitement and she smiled and sighed. “Fang Zhou and her siblings are really good! It’s not easy to provoke them now! Qing’er and Che’er suffered but they really made their uncle and aunt lose face and it sounds like they deserved it! Oh, it really is amazing, very amazing! Really have to blame that couple for having beads instead of eyes, who told them to look down on people in the first place! Seeing that they are gaining power, they try to climb up, huh? They are really fools!”

“It’s okay to talk about these things in front of me but don’t talk outside!” Aunt Zhang warned.

“I know, I know, I’m not stupid!” Madam Zhao quickly agreed and then sighed. “Ah, I didn’t expect that even Aunt Niu would speak up for them! This is really rare! No wonder, Aunt Niu has been crowing all over the village, saying that her family hosted a Young Master Cui from a first-rate wealthy family in the southwest and now she wants to help Fang Zhou! Mother, you should ask Fang Zhou if the Cui family really is a first-rate wealthy family! How rich must they be?”

Speaking these last two sentences, Madam Zhao’s eyes lit up.

“You say, you—” Aunt Zhang glanced silently at Madam Zhao silently and said without anger: “Do you need to mind others? What does it have to do with us? Telling me to ask Fang Zhou! I’m not as bored as you!”

When Madam Zhao heard this, it didn’t matter. She smiled indifferently and couldn’t help but add, “Aunt Niu doesn’t understand but Uncle Li Zheng is someone who has seen the world better than us. He should know, right? Really, since the Cui family and the Su family are relatives, would the Su family have no money after buying so much land? It can be seen that the Cui family is definitely not bad… beside, Madam Niu was open about how many gifts the Cui family left at their house. The blankets and bedding were dried in the yard and they even opened the doors so people passing by could see! Tsk tsk, they really are good, even better than the ones sold in the city shops! Aunt Niu said that Young Master Cui rewarded them five taels as soon as they arrived— five taels! Burning the charcoal kiln, we would only make fifty taels if we were exhausted! Oh mother, why did you give Fang Zhou such a good thing! Is this their family home now? Our family also has a vacant room, why didn’t she put Young Master Cui at our house?”

“You be quiet!” Aunt Zhang was a little impatient listening to her whine and complain so much and her face sank when she heard such provocative complaints. Speaking in a low voice, she said: “They all say that people are ungrateful! So, what do you mean by this? Are you complaining about Fang Zhou or about me? If Young Master Cui really does have that status, who could afford to entertain him other than Zhang Li Zheng? Forget about this! Fang Zhou is a kind child, when would she get something good and not think about sharing it with us? We shared the game we hunted and they brought over a fresh omelet while it was hot! Didn’t she also bring over a box of snacks brought by Young Master Cui? Go inside. If you dare talk about such nonsense outside, see how I teach you!”

This was too serious and Madam Zhao’s face went sullen and pale.

This was not like in the past. Aunt Zhang loved to help Fang Zhou and the others and though Madam Zhao did not dare to express her objections openly, she would say a few sour remarks from time to time. She might even do something deliberate to hinder Aunt Zhang. She knew she was wrong but she pretended to be deaf and ignored her.

Now it was the other way around. Because of Aunt Zhang and Uncle Li, Lian Fang Zhou treated their family very well, how could she dare to add trouble to her mother-in-law.

Madam Zhao hurriedly laughed and said: “Mother, I was just speaking casually in front of you! I, I was just talking! Don’t worry, I’m not stupid enough to talk outside! Fang Zhou, Fang Zhou, she is so kind to us, what—”

“It’s fine if you understand!” Aunt Zhang naturally knew what kind of virtue her daughter-in-law had and that she rarely thought about the words on her lips, just saying whatever came to mind. It might be that she really didn’t have this kind of idea, she would just warn her without doing anything.

After saying this, Aunt Zhang snorted, lifted her foot, and walked away.

Madam Zhao was startled. Feeling bored, she walked away.

After a quick lunch, Ah Jian said to Lian Fang Zhou: “This morning, we dug up the water plantains and I think that this afternoon, let Ah Ze, Qin Feng, and Su Zi Ji should go over and plant them. I will accompany you to go over to Boss Gu and check out the work.” Anyways, it’s only to the entrance of the village. Let Qing’er and Che’er also come and look around, we can check the courtyard and see if anything needs to be done.”

Lian Fang Qing and Lian Che’s eyes lit up and they quickly agreed, looking at Lian Fang Zhou eagerly.

They had wanted to go to the warehouse compound for a long time but the construction was underway there. There were many reasons the construction site was unsafe, so Lian Fang Zhou had forbidden them from going.

Lian Ze also smiled and said, “Brother Ah Jian is right, sister! Let him accompany you to do an inspection, otherwise I will worry! It’s enough for the three of us to go plant those water plantains!”

“Alright! Since you have said so, let’s go with that!” Lian Fang Zhou nodded with a smile.

  1. Caring for a child under 10 years old who has been slapped by an adult is not spoiling him, but rather placing important concern on the child’s well being! Che’er could have suffered from really bad internal head injuries (a concussion, loss of hearing, or just bad brain development) from this and the FL (who is supposedly a know it all in multiple categories) over looks this and moves on from just a look given by Ah Jian? Yeah I kinda get how Ah Jian is a superman when it comes to physical health knowledge, but still… 😭😭

    1. Likely, he wasn’t hit so hard that it would cause damage, after all this is an era where hitting kids is common and even she would know not to go too far so I doubt she used all her strength. As far as spoiling them, this is also an era where men are supposed to be tough, no crying, etc etc, so AJ wants him to grow up without being coddled. From a modern perspective, this is crazy but ‘when in rome, do as the romans do’ and all that.
