Extra 1

A few hundred miles deep in the open sea.

A small tentacle reached out of the sand, turning like a radar. When it found that there were no other creatures around, a small head appeared out of the sand.

The tentacles on the creature’s head stood straight, vigilantly scanning the surrounding environment. Slowly, eight tentacles began to crawl towards a distant rock.

Most sea creatures had poor eyesight and could only rely on changes in the water pattern to ‘see’. One of the tentacles suddenly trembled, alerting the creature to something big swimming in its direction.

The small body froze. It’s tentacle hung down as its skin began to quietly change color. Small bursts of patterns and textures spread out, blending in with the seabed.

The large creature swam closer, circling for a while. Finding nothing, it swam away again.

Eventually, the tentacles of the small creature could not detect any movements. It waited for a long time before its skin gradually returned to normal. It started to swim towards its target stone again.

Appearing out of nowhere, the large creature that was supposed to have swum away swooped down at a fast speed and grabbed it.

The big creature had a pair of big, round eyes which studied the ugly, eight-legged fish in its paws, looking back and forth. It’s tentacles and rough skin were not let off, it even pulled out the small tentacles on its head to get a better look.

It wasn’t until the big creature heard a sound on the waves, calling it from afar, that it stopped studying the octopus clownfish. Sticking out its tongue, it licked the fish, biting it. Finding that it did not taste good, it tore the fish apart in dismay and threw it to the sea floor. The fragments quickly became a meal for the other microorganisms.

With a swing of its big tail, Shi Shiran* swam towards the source of the sound. This mermaid, who was little more than half a year old, was relatively bigger than most marine life but nowhere near full grown. At present, its body was only two-thirds the size of an adult.

The young mermaid was still not allowed to leave without an adult but its age was not small. He had already learned a lot and its swimming speed was close to an adult. No longer satisfied hunting with its parents, he would frequently sneak away to take risks while its parents were not paying attention.

The young mermaid swam back to its mother’s side. The adult female hung quietly in the water column, casually holding a struggling, three-meter-long sunfish. When she saw her child, she simply pressed down. The sunfish went limp.

Excited, the young mermaid darted over to reveal its sharp claws. Together, they dissected the big sunfish and shared a beautiful meal.

When they finished, its mother said she would take him back to her home. The young mermaid twisted its tail unhappily, trying to escape, but the great mermaid quickly caught it firmly and bit the small spot under its dorsal fin.

The young mermaid struggled twice but quickly realized that if it tried to break away from its mother’s control, its dorsal fin would be damaged. Satisfied, the mother took her obedient child back to her territory.

This group of mermaids controlled a huge territory that stretched for hundreds of nautical miles. They occupied the deepest flats in the ocean, which had the most corals and the least ocean currents.

The young mermaid and its parents lived in a cave dug out of a large reef. It was only three days ago that they allowed it to have its own cave.

Its mother pushed him inside its coral nest and patted her restless child with her tail, beckoning it to stay inside. Then she turned around and went to find her partner.

The young mermaid watched her swim away and knew that if it tried to escape, the adults would block it. It lay flat on the sand and buried its head, dorsal fins drooping.

However, its desire for freedom would not be changed.

Several weeks later, the mermaid found an opportunity to sneak away when the others were sleeping. It did not notice its father quietly following a few hundred meters behind him.

Mature mermaids were often restless, wanting their own space. It was not strange that the young mermaid wanted to be autonomous.

The mermaid who had successfully ‘escaped’ its parents was so excited that he swam to the shallow waters. He had never seen them before and enjoyed the warm sun and the new smells. It was curious about everything, the green algae, the squeaky creatures with the same scales flying above the water, and the sharp tail things jumping in the seaweed.

It cried to catch a thing fishing on the beach and found that the pokey things on its body choked its throat. The young mermaid was having a great time.

Until one day, while chasing a big turtle in the shallow water, something big fell from the sky and landed in front of it.

The mermaid quickly caught it and, seeing that it seemed to be asleep, took it to shore. While he pulled it along, it accidentally tore its skin, revealing two smooth white tails.

How could this be? The young mermaid looked at the two-tailed fish with pity, it had no scales or claws, how pitiful!

It pulled the two oddly shaped tails and found that they were slippery and tender under its fingers. It had never touched anything so comfortable! The young mermaid was so excited, it couldn’t help but take a bite. To its disappointment, the creature tasted as bad as the tiny things jumping in the seaweed.

Well, even if it was not tasty, the mermaid would not throw away this two-tailed fish. It’s a pity that it did not taste good but it did smell good. Satisfied, the mermaid licked the fish again.

The young mermaid lay on the shore, studying the dying fish. It looks like itself… but not like it. The hair on its head was smooth and felt very good, the mermaid though enviously, stroking the fish’s tail.

Until it heard a very loud scream.

The fish suddenly sat up, frightening the mermaid. It instinctively flared its fins, staring at the fish’s black eyes that stood out from its white face. The mermaid was surprised, and a little jealous, to see that the fish’s face was moving**.

It could even make sounds, the mermaid thought with some envy as it listened to the noises coming from the white fish’s throat. It wished it could make a sound.

The white fish, with no scales or claws, suddenly did not seem pitiful at all.

The author has something to say:  Andrew’s perspective you want…

Seeing that some comrades feel short, the author Jun feels that this length is just right. The author is going to prepare for the end of the exam period. When I made the outline, I had already set it up almost at this time, and I basically wrote all the things I wanted to write, and the following waste stems will be the original settings of some authors. But the plot that was finally abandoned, let’s take a look.

  Then again, there is no Andrew perspective in the outline, this is enough to meet your requirements. I don’t know how you feel about writing this time. Will it be weird? {Scratch head}

TN: Andrew is a rebel child but we all knew that, haha.

* Shi Shiran (施施然) was not able to be translated so it may be his actual name. If anyone knows what this means, let me know.

** I find it a little odd that Andrew is jealous that Ye Zheng can make expressions. No mermaid can make expressions and so there would be no reason for Andrew to want or need that ability, or even recognize what it is. If a human saw someone’s face moving in ways that ours did not, I think the first response would be disgust or confusion, not ‘I wish my face could do that’. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

  1. The logic in this story is ridiculous sometimes. I’ve decided to shut down my brain to enjoy this story. So, yes I’ll be weirded/intrigued my someone who makes different expressions from me. But it didn’t bother me much

    1. Haha, that is a good attitude to have! These sorts of things don’t ruin my enjoyment of the story but I do like to look at what the author writes vs. world building beyond the author. Its probably why I like fanfiction so much.

  2. Yep he’s such a cute rebel ❣️
She was sailing in the Caribbean, I remember earlier mention of the Bermuda Triangle so I guessed that she got sucked into a weird inter dimensional world 😳
